Free State volleyball wins one, loses two

? Free State High’s trip to a volleyball quadrangular Thursday at Shawnee Mission South started poorly.

Then it got worse.

The Firebirds, whose departure was delayed by an ailing transport van, lost two players to injury and went 1-2 at the quad.

FSHS (2-5), which had to borrow a van from Lawrence High and arrived so late it delayed the start of the quad, beat Leavenworth, 15-3, 15-8, but lost to SM South, 15-13, 15-11, and SM North, 15-7, 15-5.

“We had a couple of injuries, and it was a night marked by inconsistent play,” FSHS coach Nancy Hopkins said. “You don’t like to lose players, especially when you’re not playing consistently to begin with.”

Free State’s Jenny Heppert suffered an ankle injury, and Hopkins was awaiting X-ray results to determine whether the injury was a strain or a hairline fracture.

Defensive specialist Brianna Green suffered a migraine headache.

“She’ll be back,” Hopkins said. “We don’t know about Jenny yet.”

The day wasn’t all lost, however.

“We have times when we’re really good,” Hopkins said. “Right now, we’re just not able to string a bunch of them together. We do some good things, then let them catch up. We are pretty young. When we get some experience, we’ll be OK.”
