Barbara Ann Shurtz Pender

Ms. Pender died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at her home.

She was born Oct. 5, 1950, in Lawrence, the daughter of Earl Burton and Mary Maurine (McDonald) Shurtz. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1968 and from Kansas University in 1973 with a degree in early childhood development. Besides Lawrence, she had also lived in Kansas City and Plano, Tex.

Ms. Pender worked at the United Childhood Development Care Center from 1973 to 1977. She worked at the Animal Hospital of Lawrence from 1977 to 1982 as a veterinarian’s assistant. She had also worked for Lawrence Memorial Hospital South, Mount Oread Medical Building, and the Lawrence Dermatology Center, where she worked until June 2002.

She married Mark Pender on Dec. 18, 1976. They divorced in 1994.

Survivors include two sons, Mitchell Ryan Pender and Kevin Michael Pender, both of Lawrence; and two brothers, Michael E. Shurtz and Eric V. Shurtz, both of Lawrence.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 320 Tall Grass Drive.
