Schurer services

She was born Dec. 5, 1941, on a farm in Sharon Township, near Audubon, Iowa, the daughter of Hans Peter Sr. and Carrie (Christensen) Jorgensen. She was raised on a farm west of Audubon and graduated from Audubon High School and Boyles Van Saint Business School in Omaha, Neb. She had lived in Lawrence since 1966.

Mrs. Schurer had formerly worked as an accountant for Mutual of Omaha Insurance Co. and Phillips Petroleum in Kansas City, Mo. She was a homemaker and volunteered in 4-H Club and Girl Scouts. She was also an active member and volunteer of parish activities at St. John’s Catholic Church, Bosom Buddies, a cancer support group, and a co-coordinator of Marriage Encounter.

She married Michael John “Mick” Schurer on Sept. 23, 1961, in Omaha. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Michele Debra Johnson, Lawrence; a son, Michael David Schurer, Lawrence; five brothers, Hans Peter Jorgensen, Lloyd Jorgensen, Franklin Jorgensen, Erick John Jorgensen, all of Audubon, and Darvin Jorgensen, Exira, Iowa; five sisters, Geneva Krauel, Mesa, Ariz., Yvonne Staples, Farragut, Iowa, Virginia Stoberl, Manning, Iowa, Beatrice Wealch and Marlene Walters, both of Audubon; and four grandchildren.

Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, where the family will greet friends after the service until 8:30 p.m.

The family suggests memorials to American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Research; Hospice Care of Douglas County; Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn.; the church; or Oncology Department of Lawrence Memorial Hospital, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
