Today

4 p.m.: “The Globalization of Nothing: Implications of 9-11,” lecture by George Ritzer, professor at the University of Maryland, Alderson Auditorium, Kansas Union, Kansas University.

Wednesday

South Park Vigil: American Legion and Lawrence firefighters and police will stage a vigil in South Park.

7 a.m.: Preparations begin for balloon release on the Midland Hospice campus at 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, Topeka. Helium balloons and cards will be available for the public to write messages to honor the memory of deceased loved ones or others lost on Sept. 11. The cards will be attached to the balloons and released after the national moment of silence at 7:46 a.m. local time. Midland staff will remain available until 2 p.m. so those who cannot attend the morning ceremony can write a message and release a balloon. 7:46 a.m.: Kansas University’s Campanile bells will toll to note the local time when American Airlines Flight 11 was flown into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Tolling will mark the successive attacks the second attack on the trade center, the attack on the Pentagon and the plane crash in Pennsylvania at 8:03 a.m., 8:43 a.m. and 9:10 a.m.

8 a.m.-6 p.m.: Prayer vigil at Unity Church, 900 Madeline Lane.

8:30 a.m.: Panel of Kansas City-area media representatives discuss Sept. 11 coverage, 130 Budig Hall, KU.

8:30 a.m.: Remembrance service at Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass.

Noon: Service including clergy from many central Lawrence churches at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

12:10 p.m.: Mass at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky., followed by prayer through the afternoon ending at 5:45 p.m.

12:30 p.m.: Kansas University faculty brass quintet performs patriotic songs at the fourth-floor lobby, Kansas Union, KU.

12:30 p.m.: “A Case Study in Engineering Ethics: The Collapse of the Twin Towers in New York City,” lecture by Steve McCabe, professor and chairman of civil and environmental engineering at KU. Lecture is at Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread Ave.

3:30 p.m.: “Poetry of Crisis: A Group Reading,” a poetry seminar, will be at the Hall Center for the Humanities conference room at KU.

6 p.m.: City, Haskell, American Legion and VFW combine for a commemoration ceremony at Haskell Stadium. Mayor Sue Hack and a military official will speak.

7 p.m.: Discussion of Sept. 11 terrorist attacks sponsored by KU’s Student Union Activities, facilitated by Frank DeSalvo, director of Counseling and Psychological Services, Hawk’s Nest, first floor of Kansas Union, KU.

7 p.m.: Memorial service sponsored by Heartland Community Church, Victory Bible Church, Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship and Lawrence Wesleyan Church, at Heartland Community Church, 619 Vt.

7 p.m.: Rosary led by Knights of Columbus at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St.

7 p.m.: “Service of Remembrance and Hope,” First United Methodist Church, 925 Vt.

7 p.m.: Formal Buddhist memorial ceremony at the Kansas Zen Center, 1423 N.Y.

7 p.m.: Service at Wheatland Church of Christ, 1449 Kasold Drive.

7 p.m.: Speech by the Rev. Peter Ross-Gotta, who was an American Red Cross volunteer in New York City, St. John’s United Church of Christ, 396 E. 900 Road, Baldwin.

7:30 p.m.: “Islamic Futures: Hope, Not Fear, is the Signpost Ahead,” lecture by Bruce Lawrence of Duke University, Alderson Auditorium, Kansas Union, KU.

8 p.m.: Lecture by Chief Richard Picciotto, the highest-ranking firefighter to survive the World Trade Center collapse and last firefighter to escape the building, Lied Center.
