Overland Park ? Free State High’s volleyball team went 1-3 Saturday at the season-opening Johnson County Community College Tournament.

The Firebirds lost to Shawnee Mission East, 7-15, 11-15; Kansas City (Mo.) Notre Dame de Sion, 2-15, 5-15; and Blue Valley West, 5-15, 9-15. FSHS beat St. Joseph (Mo.) Central, 15-3, 15-9.

Linsey Morningstar had 38 assists. Jamie Stanclift had 13 kills, Jenny Heppert 12 and Jayme Lisher 11.

“Shawnee Mission East is probably going to be one of the toughest teams in the league. Notre Dame is defending state champion in (Class) 5A. They were tough.They had some trees,” Firebird coach Nancy Hopkins said. “We are young and trying to get them together. We had sparks of good play and made some errors.”

The Firebirds will travel to SM East Thursday.
