The Topeka Chapter of the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers has named officers for 2002-03. The officers are: Amy M artens, BlueCross & BlueShield of Kansas, state director; Terry Coder, Professional Engineering Consultants, P.A., chapter director; Randy Osburn, Bartlett & West Engineers, president; Keith Beatty, City of Emporia, vice president; Brian Armstrong, Bartlett & West Engineers Inc., treasurer; and Stacey Lamer, Delich, Roth, and Goodwillie, P.A., secretary.

Philip Padden, co-owner of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, attended the National Funeral Directors Assn. Leadership conference in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The event provided funeral service professionals with the insight and tools necessary to help them serve the needs of their communities. Attendees participated in educational seminars and roundtable discussions.

Patrick Schroeder has joined Cotton-O’Neil Clinic, a division of Stormont-Vail HealthCare. Schroeder is a gastroenterologist and will work at the Cotton-O’Neil Clinic in Topeka. He graduated in 1989 from Kansas University’s School of Medicine, where he completed his residency in 1992.

Jeremy Douglas has joined GLPM Architects as director of business development. Douglas will focus on developing more of a client base in the Kansas City area. He was executive director of Downtown Lawrence Inc. for one year. He also worked for Wells Fargo Bank in California.

Jacki Ibbetson has joined Lawrence Therapy Services and Baldwin Therapy Services as a full-time physical therapist. Ibbetson has advanced training in the areas of orthopedic injuries, treatment of chronic and acute pain and myofascial release.

The Lawrence Rotary Clubs and Rotary District 5710 are seeking outstanding business persons and professionals to visit Istanbul, Turkey, in May 2003 as part of the Group Study Exchange program of The Rotary Foundation.

Since 1965, The Rotary Foundation has sponsored group study exchange programs worldwide. Through the program, teams of professionals and business people exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. The exchange involves four-week visits during which team members share personal knowledge of their country and experience the customs, vocations and lifestyles of another.

The purpose of a Group Study Exchange is to promote international understanding and goodwill through person-to-person contact. While abroad, team members stay in homes of Rotarians and have the opportunity to meet their professional counterparts. They also will give presentations to Rotary clubs and other groups. The Rotary Foundation provides round-trip airfare and local Rotarians in the host country provide meals, lodging and group travel in the district.

Douglas County Bank announces Bill Martin has been hired as vice president/trust officer. Martin has more than 20 years experience in trusts and estates, as both a banker and an attorney. He is a graduate of Kansas University, Washburn University Law School, and the National Graduate Trust School at Northwestern University. He also is a certified trust and financial advisor and a member of the Trust Division Board of the Kansas Bankers Assn.

Honors and awards

Haskell Cultural Center and Museum, Lawrence, was named a Midwest Travel Treasure by AAA Midwest Traveler. The museum is featured in the September/October 2002 issue of the magazine. It received a certificate for the designation. Haskell Cultural Center and Museum is scheduled to open Saturday and will celebrate American Indian heritage and traditions through artifacts and exhibits.

The Longaberger Company recognized Carol Ohmart, Lawrence, as a 2002 national top sales award winner at its annual convention in Columbus, Ohio. Ohmart received the sales achiever award in the $20,000 t0 $34,999 category. The Newark, Ohio-based company, which makes handcrafted baskets, has about 7,000 employees and is listed in Forbes magazine’s top 500 privately held companies.

Coming events

Lynn Parman, vice president of economic development for the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, and Kelvin Heck, chairman of the chamber’s Board of Directors, will give a presentation on their vision for the future of economic development in Lawrence and Douglas County at an upcoming meeting of the Lawrence Technology Assn.. The presentation will be at noon Thursday at the Hereford House, Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive.

Parman and Heck also will discuss what role the technology sector plays in the future and how the Lawrence Technology Assn. can be a more integrated partner in the business of economic development.

The Topeka Chapter of the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers will meet from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Shawnee Country Club, 913 SE 29th St. in Topeka. The speakers will be Neal Dobler, director of public works, Topeka; Keith Beatty, acting public works director, Emporia, and Chuck Soules, public works director, Lawrence.

The Twilight Chapter of the American Business Women’s Assn., in conjunction with Talbot’s and Premier Designs Jewelry, is sponsoring a fall fashion preview event at 6 p.m. Sept. 16 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s auditorium.

Networking and hors d’oeuvres will be from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with the fashion show beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.

The Twilight Chapter of the American Business Women’s Assn. exists to bring together businesswomen of diverse occupations and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking, mentoring and national recognition. The club meets on the third Monday of each month to provide educational opportunities for members through seminars and workshops.

Kansas University and Meyer Law Firm will co-sponsor a free seminar “Forming a Business, Your Legal Obligations” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 19 at 734 Vt.

“Forming a Business, Your Legal Obligations” is the second in a series of free business management seminars offered by KU’s Small Business Development Center. The seminar focuses on a comparison of available legal structures and their financial and legal advantages.

The KU Small Business Development Center also offers free and confidential business consulting to small businesses. The SBDC is a partnership with the Small Business Administration, Kansas Department of Commerce, and KU.

Other upcoming free seminars in Lawrence include “Meet the Tax Man” on Oct. 1 and “Finding Cash,” on Oct. 24.
