Spencer Consort to take listeners on journey

The Spencer Consort, a period instrument ensemble, will perform “From Chanson to Cantata: A Journey from the Renaissance to the Classic Era” at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Central Court at the Helen Foresman Spencer Museum of Art at Kansas University.

The program includes two French chansons; a fantasia from the 16th century; a flute duet of dance music by Pierre Danican Philidor; a slow movement from Antonio Vivaldi’s “Cello Sonata in A Minor”; George Frideric Handel’s “Flute Sonata in G Major”; a fantasy for flute by Georg Philipp Telemann; “Trio in G Major” by Franz Anton Hoffmeister; and Handel’s “Mi palpita il cor,” featuring mezzo-soprano Kendra Resseguie.

Members of the group are Kendra Resseguie, mezzo-soprano; Joy Laird, Baroque flute and recorder; Paul Laird, Baroque cello and viola da gamba; John Boulton, Baroque flute and recorder; and Tony Bushard, harpsichord.

Both concerts are free and open to the public.

Blues and Barbecue kicks off Friday

Ottawa Blues musician Steve Strickland will be the featured performer at Blues and Barbecue, a fund-raiser for the Ottawa Community Arts Council.

The event begins at 6 p.m. Friday at the Carnegie Cultural Center, Fifth and Main.

Admission is $5. Stickland will sign copies of his latest CD during intermissions.
