‘Dead Man Walking’ author visits K-State

Manhattan Sister Helen Prejean, author of the book that was the basis for the Academy Award-winning movie “Dead Man Walking,” will give a talk at 7 p.m. Monday in McCain Auditorium at Kansas State University.

The movie will be shown after the lecture at 9 p.m. in the Union’s Main Ballroom. The lecture and movie are free.

Prejean has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize four times and has received several awards, including the Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame, the Champion of Liberty Award from the U.S. Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Sanctity of Life Award from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

KU recital features trombone, piano

Mike Hall, Kansas University assistant professor of trombone, and Robert Koenig, KU assistant professor of piano, will present a recital of new music for trombone and piano at 7 p.m. Monday in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall at KU.

Hall and Koenig will perform compositions by Jean-Michael Damase, Adrian Barthe, Elizabeth Raum, David Wells and Anthony Iannaconne, which range from operatic dramas to melodic capers.

The recital is free and open to the public.

Spencer Museum offers adult education classes

The Helen Foresman Spencer Museum of Art’s education department will offer “Get the Picture,” a series of free adult education classes this fall.

A slate of introductory art appreciation sessions is offered on the second Thursday or last Saturday of the month, September through November. The classes are for art lovers and those with no prior art history knowledge.

The classes will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 and Nov. 14 and from 10:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 28, Oct. 26 and Nov. 23.

Holiday Art Fair seeking entries

Applications are available for the Lawrence Art Guild Holiday Art Fair, which will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

Applications for the juried show can be picked up at the arts center or Lawrence Public Library. To request an application be sent to you, call Lawrence Art Guild president Elaine Matt at 841-2065.

The show will include artists selling their works, music and an evening reception.
