Rinke was found shot to death Oct. 14, 1999 in his Jefferson County home near 21st and Republic streets.

Trial testimony revealed that Gleason planned to rob Rinke of cash and marijuana and enlisted help from Cady and Bennett.

Rinke was lured to the front gate of his property by Bennett then returned to find Gleason and Cady inside his house.

Rinke struggled with Cady for control of a sawed-off shotgun and was hit in the chest when the gun went off. The suspects fled.

After calling 911, officers found Rinke lying dead in his kitchen.

Sheriff’s officers and Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents worked on the case more than two years before arresting the three suspects in April.
