Death of 10-year-old girl raises questions, concerns

? Little got in the way of 10-year-old Taylor Davison, the only girl on her football team.

Last week, Taylor left practice complaining of a headache and collapsed as she walked off the field with her coach. Three days later, she was dead.

Medical examiners say Taylor died Monday of a blow to the head that led to blood clot on the right side of her brain, possibly caused by a tackle at a full-contact practice three days before her collapse.

Her death has caused some to question tackle football for children.

“To me, the child was subjected to a higher risk than I would accept,” said Dr. Charles Shubin, a pediatrician at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. “It’s asking a lot for an immature body to tolerate.”

Fred Engh, president of the National Alliance for Youth Sports, an advocacy organization for safe sports, said some might focus on the fact that Taylor was a girl playing with boys. But he said that shouldn’t matter.

“The key thing is ‘Are the people instructed in safety?’ and for the most part, you find that they aren’t,” he said.
