Paltrow kisses and makes up

Deauville, France Gwyneth Paltrow wants to set the record straight.

Since a magazine quoted her as saying she was dissatisfied with the British dating scene, there’s been a national uproar in defense of Britain’s men. One newspaper, the Independent, carped: “Who wants to spend the night with Gwyneth?”

Paltrow says her remarks were misunderstood. At the Deauville Festival of American Cinema to promote “Possession,” she told reporters Tuesday she was merely commenting on a “sociological difference between English dating and American dating.”

“I happen to adore British men and I adore Britain,” the 29-year-old actress said.

Paltrow’s going to be spending a lot more time in Britain. She’s bought an apartment in London, and in the fall she’ll start shooting a movie there about the tragic love of poets Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes.

Practicing parental guidance

Deauville, France Tom Hanks says he’s not letting his young kids see his screen performance as a gun-toting mobster in “Road to Perdition” because it’s too violent.

“I told them, ‘You’ll see it later. When you’re older,”‘ Hanks said in an interview printed Tuesday in Le Parisien newspaper. “I don’t joke around when it comes to raising my kids.”

Hanks said he was leaving the Deauville Festival of American Cinema to be home in time for his children’s first day of school.

The 46-year-old actor has two young sons with his wife, Rita Wilson, and an older son and daughter from his first marriage.

Tie one on for charity

New York Handbags made from former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s old neckties will be sold in a charity auction to benefit families of people killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Proceeds from tonight’s auction at Henri Bendel, a chic Fifth Avenue department store, will benefit the Twin Towers Fund, a charity Giuliani established to help families of uniformed rescue workers who died in the attacks.

Giuliani said he found several dozen neckties while cleaning out his office at City Hall last year. His girlfriend, Judith Nathan, suggested donating them to charity.

Combs not immune from violence

New York Sean “P. Diddy” Combs says despite being extremely wealthy, he’s still exposed to too much violence.

“Nearly every black man faces an unacceptable level of violence in this society,” the 32-year-old rap mogul said in this week’s New Yorker magazine. “I’m not different.”

In 1999, Combs and his then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez were at a New York nightclub when three people were wounded in a shooting. He was acquitted last year of weapons and bribery charges from the incident.
