Mellies services

Services for Elmer V. Mellies, 72, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will be at Shawnee Center Cemetery in Wakarusa.

Mr. Mellies died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sept. 17, 1929, in Ness City, the son of Elmer Edward and Emma J. (May) Mellies.

Mr. Mellies attended school in Overbrook, graduating in 1948 from Overbrook High School. He served with the U.S. Navy Seabees from 1948 to 1953 and was stationed in Guam during the Korean War. He then worked for the U.S. Navy Atomic Energy Commission in Albuquerque, N.M.

Mr. Mellies began his career as a meat cutter at Leonard Meat Co. in Topeka. He also worked for Kroger Grocery Store in Dayton, Ohio.

He moved in 1966 to Lawrence, where he was a longtime meat cutter for Kroger Grocery Store. He was meat department supervisor when the company closed the store. He then worked as meat department supervisor for County Mart in Ottawa until he retired in 1991.

Mr. Mellies was a life member of Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion and Alford-Clarke Post No. 852 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Lawrence. He also was a member of the Travelers Protection Assn.

He married Pauline A. Moneymaker on March 16, 1957, in Miami, Okla. She survives of Lawrence.

Other survivors include a brother, Richard, Auburn.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. The family will meet with friends from 1 p.m. until the service time Friday at the mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to the Oncology Department at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. They may be sent in care of the funeral home.
