Local high school and junior high sports teams will definitely need their water bottles Wednesday.

Temperatures will soar under sunny skies. And the humidity will make it seem even hotter, says Matt Makens, 6News meteorologist.

“It’s a little bit warmer today. You’ll probably notice the humidity a little,” Makens said. “The temperature will be 92 for today. It may feel a degree or two warmer than that.”

Skies will be mostly clear Wednesday afternoon, so people at the practices and the Lawrence High School girls tennis meet at Shawnee Mission North will feel the intensity of the heat.

“They’ll need a few water breaks. They’ll probably be sweating plenty,” Makens said.

The average high for Wednesday’s date is 85. The record high for Wednesday was 104, set in 1913.

The average low for this date is 64 and the record low was 44, set back in 1974.

The forecast also calls for uncomfortably warm weather for area high school football games on Friday night, Makens said.

“Each game will be start off hot and be fairly pleasant toward the end of the games. Humidity might be a factor in those games,” Makens said.

The Lawrence area hasn’t had any rainfall for nearly two weeks.

The last measurable rain was .10 of an inch on Aug. 24. That brings the yearly total to 20.59 inches. The average rainfall by this date is 27.91 inches.

How long will the hot, dry spell last?

“We’ll notice changes at the start of next week, Sunday into Monday. There could be a rain chance Monday or Tuesday,” Makens said.
