50th anniversary ride: Railfans event features rare locomotives

Baldwin Historic locomotive equipment will hit the tracks to Norwood, pictured above, next weekend during Midland Railway’s Railfans Weekend.

Featured at this year’s event scheduled for Sept. 14 and 15 at the historic Santa Fe Depot, 1515 W. High St., Baldwin will be the former Rock Island Rocket locomotive No. 652. The engine is one of two remaining Rock Island E units and is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The engine will be teamed with the other surviving Rock Island E unit, Midland’s E-6 No. 630, during the excursions.

Other classic engines and several coaches also will be on hand.

The former Kansas City Southern Railroad Post Office car No. 30 will be in operation with retired postal workers on board to demonstrate the operation of the Railroad Post Offices during the days when mail was carried and sorted on these moving cars.
