KU Football Notebook: Vegas ‘business trip’ for KU

Kansas University football players interested in a “Vegas Vacation” might have to rent the Chevy Chase movie.

“This is a business trip,” coach Mark Mangino said Monday of the Jayhawks’ game Saturday night at UNLV. “We are going to try to provide some sort of opportunity to take our kids around Las Vegas, maybe on a little bus tour or something. We are going to check today with the NCAA to see how they view having our kids in Las Vegas. I think that most of the kids on our team have not been there, so we’d like to at least give them a little tour of the community and let them see the sights. But it’s a business trip, and our kids know that.”

Kansas and UNLV are both coming off losses in their respective season openers. KU suffered a 45-3 loss to Iowa State on Saturday, while UNLV endured a 27-7 home loss against Wisconsin.

The Rebels’ game was called midway through the fourth quarter after a power outage darkened Sam Boyd Stadium.

Mangino is hoping his offense, which mustered 150 yards against ISU, can avoid a power outage of his own.

“I’m going to find out where the switch is,” Mangino said of UNLV’s lights, “and I’ll let you know if I plan on shutting them off or not.”

Despite the lopsided loss, Mangino said his squad remained upbeat.

“Our kids know they’re going to have to fight week after week,” he said.

UNLV was installed as a 14-point favorite for Saturday’s game.

Fans wanted: UNLV’s crowd of 42,075 fans for the opener against Wisconsin set a school and state record for a team sporting event. The school installed 5,000 bleacher seats in the north end zone for that game, but those seats will be removed before this weekend’s game.

New foe: KU is 3-0 all-time against UNLV in basketball, but the teams have never met in football. The Rebels are 1-8 all-time against teams from the Big 12 Conference. Coach John Robinson is 9-3 against Big 12 teams during his tenures at UNLV and USC.

Go west: KU will travel west of the Rocky Mountains for the first time since a 45-42 loss to Utah in 1996 at Salt Lake City.
