Jackson services

Mr. Jackson died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, Mo. He had lived in Eudora since moving there from the Staff Village at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant near DeSoto.

He was born April 5, 1914, in Franklin County, the son of Rueben Porter and Nettie (Mitchell) Jackson. He graduated in 1933 from Rantoul High School and then attended Kansas University for two years.

Mr. Jackson worked for Hercules Inc. as head of the water department for Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant from 1944 until he retired in 1971. He then worked in civil service at the Fort Leavenworth water department for 12 years. Previously, he had worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp. in 1934 and then was the superintendent of a nursery in Ottawa for seven years.

He was a member of Eudora Assembly of God Church, where he served as a deacon for 52 years and superintendent of Sunday schools for 47 years. He previously had served as a deacon at the Ottawa Assembly of God Church. He had been a member of the troop committee for Eudora Boy Scout Troop 64 since 1969, served as its chairman for 28 years, and was the charter organizational representative for seven years. His scout honors included the District Award of Merit, the James E. West Fellowship Award, the God and Service Award and Brotherhood Membership in the Order of the Arrow. He also was a member of the Eudora Lions Club.

He married Augusta Matilda Henry on Oct. 20, 1935, in Topeka. She died Feb. 23, 1999.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Jane Wright, Manhattan; a son, Glenn Allen, Eudora; a brother, Dean, Fresno, Calif.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to Eudora Assembly of God Church or the Camp Nash Endowment Fund, sent in care of the mortuary.
