IN 1902

On Oct. 30, 1902, the Lawrence Journal cited the Topeka Capital’s explanation of why registered voters had declined from 3,004 to 1,867 in the city. The Capital observed, “Lawrence, which reported more campaign ‘enthusiasm’ than any other town in the state, has a greater slump in registration than any town from which reports have been received. The ‘enthusiasm’ in Lawrence must have been due to college students, who have a habit of hollering every time there is the slightest excuse to exercise their lungs.”
