Snow in today’s forecast

It probably will be raining when you wake up this morning. Be prepared for rain mixed with snow this afternoon and temperatures go down instead of up as the day progresses, weather forecasters said.

A total of .13 of an inch of rain had fallen between 10 p.m. Monday and 10 p.m. Tuesday, 6News meteorologist Ross Janssen said.

As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, Skyhawk weather spotter Kenneth Blair recorded .10 of an inch of rain in the 1700 block of West 19th Terrace. Most of it fell in the morning, Blair said. In the Deerfield area, Randy Tongier recorded .15 of an inch of rain. William Winkler measured .02 of an inch of rain northwest of 26th and Iowa streets.

Today’s high will be in the low 40s, and that will be recorded this morning, Janssen said. It will fall into the 30s this afternoon.

Sorority to stage Halloween party for youths

Alpha Chi Omega sorority at Kansas University will have its 15th annual children’s Halloween party from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at 1500 Sigma Nu Place.

The party provides an alternative to trick-or-treating for parents and children. Activities will include a haunted house, a fish pond, face painting, cookie decorating and trick-or-treating.

The event is free for all, and members of the sorority will be available to supervise children for the party.

Meeting to focus on storm sewer projects

The city will conduct a public meeting tonight to explain planned storm sewer improvements for the area west of 21st and Kentucky.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.

The planned project will include utility relocations, new streets and sidewalks and a new storm-sewer collection system.

A second phase of the project is currently being designed to address the open channel between Learnard Avenue and 19th Street.

Groups collecting eyeglasses

On Thursday, members of Brownie Troop 726 and the Lawrence River City Lions Club will collect used eyeglasses as they trick-or-treat.

The “Sight Night” collection is part of a nationwide program sponsored by Lions Club International and LensCrafters. Collected glasses will be recycled and given to needy people in developing countries.

Prescription and nonprescription glasses and sunglasses can also be donated at Community Mercantile, 901 Iowa, or Hillcrest School, 1045 Hilltop Drive.

County, dealership offer free child-safety seat checks

Douglas County Safe Kids and Dale Willey Automotive will provide certified child passenger safety seat technicians to inspect child seats from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Dale Willey Automotive, 2840 Iowa.

Technicians will inspect and adjust seats, as well as give tips for the best fit. Past checks have found four out of five seats are installed incorrectly, increasing the risk of injury to children in cars.

No appointment is necessary, but participants are encouraged to come early. Please have the child seat installed before arriving.

FunRun to benefit Central

Students at Central Junior High School will do a little sweating Friday, but it won’t be from a challenging exam.

The school’s annual FunRun fund-raiser will be at 2 p.m. at the school, 1400 Mass.

Central’s goal is to raise $12,000. If each of the junior high’s students collects $20, the goal will be met.

The money helps cover the cost of after-school activities, camp scholarships, uniforms and other “extras” that benefit students and teachers.
