Lawrence police were investigating a robbery Monday afternoon at Tobacco Express in the Hillcrest Shopping Center, 925 Iowa.

Shortly after 2 p.m., two men and a woman walked into the store and sprayed the clerk in the face with some sort of pepper spray, said Sgt. Michael Pattrick, police spokesman.

The clerk was incapacitated by the pepper spray, but he told police he could hear items being moved around inside the store, Pattrick said. When the clerk heard the suspects leave, he went to a nearby shop to call for help.

At least a half dozen officers were on the scene Monday afternoon, interviewing witnesses and going over the store for evidence.

Pattrick said police are unsure what exactly was taken from the store.
