Baldwin dominates 4A cross country regional

? Baldwin picked up an individual title and two team titles, and Mill Valley’s Jay Matlack raced to the boys individual title at a Class 4A cross country regional on Saturday at Tonganoxie.

Matlack won the boys’ race in 15:59.42. Runner-up Zac Towns of Baldwin was far behind at 16:36.55.

BHS took second, third (Keith Coward), fifth (Phil Wagner) and seventh (Brian Gerstner) and won the team title with 27 points.

Tongie, paced by Kyle Norris’ fourth-place finish and Tommy Powell’s 10th-place showing, was second with 55 points. Mill Valley was third with 61 points, DeSoto fourth with 140 points and Eudora fifth with 142 points.

On the girls’ side, Baldwin’s Erica Ogle and Denice Orloff went 1-2, in 11:56.97 and 12:08.77, pacing the BHS girls.

Amy Craig (fifth), Abby Hofmeier (sixth), Kayla Pringle (eighth) and Missy Westgate (10th) rounded out Baldwin’s top-10.

DeSoto was second with 69 points, Mill Valley was third at 88 and Tongie fourth at 92.

Andrea Young paced DeSoto with a fourth-place finish, and Laura Korb was seventh for Tonganoxie. Megan Ballock was ninth for Eudora.

Baldwin volleyball wins

Louisburg The Baldwin High volleyball team won the Louisburg 4A Regional on Saturday with three convincing victories.

The Bulldogs defeated Burlington, 2-0 (15-11, 15-1) and Prairie View, 2-1 (16-18, 15-4, 15-3), then handled Osawatomie 15-4, 15-7 for the championship.

Emily Brown had 27 kills and 23 assists, Kari Garrison had 27 assists and Rachel Miles had 12 kills and 14 blocks for the Bulldogs (31-7).

“We’re pretty excited; we think this might be the first team to go to state,” Baldwin coach Jill Brown said. “We haven’t really been a volleyball town, so some people might be surprised.”
