Seabury Academy winless at Oskaloosa

? Free State High’s volleyball team finished 1-2 and Lawrence High was 1-3 on Saturday at the Emporia Tournament.

The Firebirds fell to Shawnee Mission Miege, 15-7, 15-7, and Shawnee Mission Northwest, 15-10, 7-15, 15-13, before defeating Maize, 8-15, 15-13, 15-12.

Free State’s Jenny Gwaltney, Jenny Heppert and Katelin Karlin were cited for superb play.

Lawrence lost to Blue Valley West, 15-6, 12-15, 15-12, Seaman, 7-15, 15-8, 15-11, and Topeka Washburn Rural, 15-7, 15-2. The Lions defeated Emporia, 15-7, 15-2.

LHS coach Jo Huntsinger said despite some struggles there were pleasing moments during Saturday’s matches.

“We played well at times but only put it together for one match and got home early,” she said.

Huntsinger said Morgan McMichael and Kim Davis were vital to the Lions’ attack.

Lawrence, 9-24, will play host to a Senior Night quadrangular on Tuesday when Emporia, Leavenworth Immaculata and Topeka West come to town.

Huntsinger said the Lions were eagerly anticipating the season’s last home matches.

“We’re really looking forward to that,” she said. “We’re going to try to do some things really differently.”

The Firebirds, 11-19, will also play host to a quadrangular on Tuesday night against Overland Park Aquinas, Tonganoxie and Topeka High. It will be the Firebirds’ Senior Night.

Also on Saturday, Seabury Academy’s volleyball team was 0-4 at the Oskaloosa Tournament.

The Seahawks lost to Pleasant Ridge, 15-5, 15-1; Horton, 4-15, 13-15; McLouth, 7-15, 5-15; and Heritage Christian, 9-15, 10-15.

Janie Schneider was cited for excellent overall play.

Seabury, 7-14, travels to Williamsburg on Tuesday for its regional tournament.
