Short-handed Jayhawks clobber CMSU, 5-0

With leading scorer Caroline Smith out because of an injury, Kansas University soccer forwards Monica Brothers and Jessica Smith took up the slack Friday against Central Missouri State University.

Brothers scored a goal and assisted on two others, and Jessica Smith scored twice in the Jayhawks’ 5-0 nonconference victory against the Division II Jennies at SuperTarget Field.

“Obviously, Caroline’s a tough player to have out,” KU coach Mark Francis said, “and you’re going to miss her, but at the same time other players have to pick up the slack, and I think they did that today and we’re going to need to do that on Sunday, too.”

Francis also cited forwards Rachel Gilfillan and Kim Karfonta for their play up front, which was important not only because of the loss of Caroline Smith but also because the Jayhawks were without three suspended players.

Senior defenders and co-captains Lindsay Hunting and Nikki Wahle and junior forward Carmel Kaplinger all were suspended from Friday’s game for violating unspecified team rules. The three also won’t play Sunday against Iowa State, which would have been the final home match for Hunting and Whale, who were part of Francis’ first freshman class.

Junior Maggie Mason and sophomore Stacy Leeper started in place of Hunting and Wahle, and both had a part in two of the Jayhawks’ first three goals.

Mason scored in the seventh minute off a pass from Amy Geha that was headed by Brothers. Jessica Smith scored on a breakaway just three minutes later, putting in a deflection off goalkeeper Michele Gonzalez’s foot.

“I think we came out ready to play,” Brothers said. “We knew we couldn’t take them lightly because we’d done that against Baylor and some other teams. We knew they’d be ready to play and could beat us, so we just had to come out and initiate our style of play.”

Kansas kept the pressure on the Jennies, and Gilfillan put the Jayhawks up 3-0 with a low shot from the left edge of the keeper’s box which curled into the right corner of the goal in the 18th minute.

Brothers assisted on that goal and scored her own in the 33rd minute with a header into the top right corner off a long pass from Leeper.

Jessica Smith added the final goal off a pass from Gabby Quiggle with just more than four minutes remaining. It was her fifth goal in the past four games, but Smith wasn’t thrilled with the team’s effort.

“We pretty much came out and didn’t do all the things we wanted to do so it’s kind of frustrating,” she said, “but we’ve got to forget about this game and come out ready to play Sunday. There were a lot of little fundamental things that we didn’t do today and that hurt us.”

Kansas was called for eight offsides and missed many other opportunities from inside the box.

“We need to play better Sunday,” Francis said. “I thought the first half was OK, but the second half was real sloppy. It’s hard when you’re up 4-0, but we have to be disciplined enough to be able to still do the simple things well and we just didn’t do that.”

Along with the three suspended players, Kansas still will be without Caroline Smith on Sunday. The freshman forward from Edina, Minn., tore her right medial collateral ligament against Oklahoma last Sunday.

“She’s going to be fine,” Francis said. “She’s going to be able to play, it’s just a matter of when. An MCL doesn’t require surgery, it can fix itself. We’re hoping she’s going to be back next weekend.”
