Positive side

To the editor:

Your paper does a disservice to the Lawrence community by its coverage of some events concerning the Watkins Museum of History. Information is sometimes incorrect or presented from a particular viewpoint. Most disturbing is the editiorializing in the headlines. As a result, the public seems to have gotten the impression that the museum is destitute, about to close down, dependent only on volunteers, and that its future lies solely within the purview of the county commission.

The governing board of the historical society has dealt with many issues during the past year, and real progress has been made toward problem-solving. The Aug. 31, 2002, net gain from operation was $28,313, compared to $1,641 on Aug. 31, 2001. There are NO unpaid bills. A new $20,470 grant has been awarded; indexing is partially complete, accessions are again being accepted and necessary repairs are within budget. This public information has never been reported by your paper.

The museum WILL be open during the holiday season, because the required paid staff is available, (not “unwilling” volunteers) after closing was “reconsidered.” We are blessed with regular volunteers who are docents, work with artifacts, help with historical and genealogical research, data-base entry and office work. Willingness to serve is not one of their problems.

It’s time for Lawrence people to come together to support their history museum, and for our only newspaper to refrain from victimizing the efforts of the many who are able to consider the larger picture of preservation rather than personal agendas!

Jeanne Ellermeier,

Lawrence
