For the Baldwin High football team, it’s just another week, just another big game. For undefeated Santa Fe Trail, it’s the first big game of the season.

The Bulldogs, 4-2, are coming off a 33-32 win against previously undefeated Eudora. They have a big, fast backfield in Micah Mason and Brian Lauridson and an offense that has scored 82 points in the last two games.

The Chargers haven’t allowed more than 10 points in any of their six wins. Their offense is built around their quarterback, Shane Miles, and his big receiver, Cameron Babb.

That’s enough buildup. The game at 7 tonight in Baldwin will take care of the rest.

“This will be the second week in a row we’ll be playing an undefeated team,” Berg said. “The kids will be really excited.”

Chargers coach Bob Von Stein agrees and said motivation won’t be a problem in the district opener.

“If it is, they’re doing the wrong thing,” he said. “They’re on life support.”

His biggest worry is the Bulldogs’ aforementioned backfield, which has racked up 1,124 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. Both backs average more than seven yards a carry  enough to worry any coach.

“I’m worried about matching that talent in the backfield. We haven’t seen anybody with two fast backs like that,” Von Stein said.

Berg is equally concerned about the Chargers’ passing offense, which promises to be far more advanced than anything his team has played. Miles threw a pair of touchdowns passes in a 20-7 victory against DeSoto last Friday, one a 53-yard bomb to Brandon Elston.

“The only real passing team we’ve seen is Spring Hill,” Berg said. “This’ll be our first real test.”

Baldwin, which plays at Baker University’s football field, should be rocking tonight. With Trail located about 30 miles west of Baldwin in Carbondale, Von Stein said the stadium would probably be packed, making for a big-time atmosphere.

“It’s a great place to play, it’s a nice field, it should be a close game,” he said. “Fans should be able to enjoy it, because it’ll be a big game.”
