Senior Swim Winners: Lawrence’s Ralph King and Carol Francis earned gold medals in swimming at the Kansas Senior Olympics and qualified for the nationals next year in Hampton Roads, Va. King won the 50 and 100 breaststroke races in his age division. Francis won the 200 breaststroke in her age group.

Free State Fund-Raiser: A golf scramble to benefit Free State High girls basketball is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday at Alvamar. Entry fee is $320 per team or $90 per individual. For information, call Bryan Duncan at 832-6050 or 843-4134.

Strikers Take Two: Lawrence Strikers, a U-18 girls soccer team, defeated Udinese, 5-1, and Ambush White, 2-1, in Heartland League play last weekend in Olathe. Emily Humbarger scored three goals and Bekaha Berkley two in the first game. Berkley accounted for both goals in the second game. The Strikers finished with a 5-3 league record.

Reichert JGC Champ: Van Reichert carded a 77 and won last Saturday’s Jayhawk Golf Club tournament at Alvamar. Ron Huckfeldt shot a 78 while Mike Grosdidier and Brent Mertz shared third place with 79s. In the net portion, Joe Calandrino and Stephen Morgan shared the low score at 72. Tom Dennis and Jim Grant each had a 73.

City Runner Eighth: Lawrence’s Carol McFall finished eighth overall in the Women’s Take Fitness to Heart 10K on Oct. 6 in Kansas City, Mo. McFall was third in her age group with a 40:12 clocking.

National Water Ski Titlist: Justin Stein, a Free State High senior, won the men’s novice slalom ski division of the INT U.S. Water Ski championships last Saturday in Houston. Lawrence’s Chris Scott finished third in the men’s intermediate kneeboard competition.

Punt, Pass and Kick: The NFL and Gatorade’s area Punt, Pass and Kick competition is set for 9 a.m. Saturday at Community Bible Church, 906 North 1464 Road. The event is open to youths ages 8 to 15 with competition for boys and girls in four age categories. Winners will advance to the sectionals in Bonner Springs. For information, call 749-0083.

Riley Sixth in Wichita: Lawrence’s Steve Riley won the men’s 45-49 age group and finished sixth overall last Sunday at the Wichita Marathon. Riley was clocked in 2:48:19. Lawrence’s Jennifer Dawdy was runner-up in the women’s 20-24 age bracket with a time of 4:05:49.

Orchards Scramble: An 18-hole two-person scramble golf tournament is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Sunday at the Orchards Golf Course. Participants will be flighted for prizes.

Ex-Jayhawk Repeats: T.J. Gaughan, a former Kansas University football player who lives in Topeka, has won the national age-group championship in flat track motorcycle racing for the second year in a row. Gaughan competed in 16 races in the ages 50 & over amateur division and in the 600cc amateur class.
