Journal-World names Paget arts editor

Mindie Paget has been named the Journal-World’s arts editor.

The appointment was announced Saturday by Richard Brack, managing editor.

Paget has been a general assignment reporter at the Journal-World since June 2001. She replaces Jan Biles, who resigned.

Paget graduated from Kansas University in 1999 with bachelor’s degrees in English and philosophy. In 2001, she received her master’s degree in journalism from KU.

At KU, she was a reporter and editor for the University Daily Kansan and an editor for Kiosk, a student art and literature magazine.

Spooky house search to begin for Halloween

The search is on.

The Journal-World is on a quest to find the city’s spookiest house display for Halloween.

If you know of a house that oozes Halloween, send in the owner’s name, address, phone number and why the house should be considered to Steve Rottinghaus, special sections editor, Lawrence Journal-World, 645 N.H., Lawrence, 66044, or e-mail him at srottinghaus@ljworld.com. Home owners can enter their own house in the contest.

Deadline to enter is Wednesday. Judging will begin on Oct. 20.

The results will be published in the Journal-World on Oct. 27.

Hike series to continue in Kansas City area

Kansas City, Mo. The Historic Kansas City Foundation will continue its Heritage Hike series.

The hikes are:

Tuesday: Hike through downtown Kansas City, Mo., 9 a.m., meet at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, Broadway and 13th Street.

Oct. 22: Hike though Hyde Park, 9 a.m., meet at 3800 Locust St.

Each hiker will receive maps, historical/architectural information, refreshments and a prize. Enrollment is through Communiversity. Cost is $42 for the HIstoric Hike package or $21 for one hike.

Midwest Poets Series announces lineup

Kansas City, Mo. The Midwest Poets Series has announced the lineup for its 20th anniversary season.

Scheduled are fiction writer, critic and essayist Janet Burroway, author of “Cutting Stone” and “Raw Silk,” Oct. 24; U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins, Nov. 21; Quincy Troupe, author of 13 books and volumes of poetry, Feb. 6; and Paulette Jiles, author of “Enemy Women,” March 27.

Readings are at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Theater at Rockhurst University, 1100 Rockhurst Road, except for the Collins’ reading, which will be in the Rockhurst Convocation Center.
