Atchison at Ottawa

Notes: Redmen have been surprise of Huron League, opening season 3-1 before losing to KC Ward last week, 44-27. Ottawa, two years from back-to-back league titles, is 2-3, including two league losses. Cyclones edged KC Sumner, 25-20, last week. Ottawa won last year’s contest, 17-6.

Mill Valley at Tonganoxie

Notes: First-ever meeting between teams. Mill Valley, 5-0, has won 10 of last 11 games, including 35-15 trouncing of Bonner Springs last week. Tonganoxie, 3-2, was hammered by Santa Fe Trail, 33-7, last week. Chieftains lone touchdown came on Justin Walker 73-yard punt return.

Perry-Lecompton at KC Piper

Notes: Kaws won a shoot-out last week, holding off DeSoto, 44-32. Senior running back Noah Rees exploded for 342 yards and five touchdowns, putting him over 1,000 yards rushing this season. P-L, 3-2, will try to maintain momentum against Piper team that won its first game of season last week, 35-31 against Leavenworth Immaculata. Kaws shut out Pirates, 20-0, last season.

Santa Fe Trail at DeSoto

Notes: Chargers, 5-0, off to best start since 1997, when they won their first eight games. SFT started slow against Tonganoxie last week before trouncing Chieftains, 33-7. It was coach Bob Von Stein’s 230th career victory. Quarterback Shane Miles passed for 317 yards 199 of it to receiver Brandon Elston and three touchdowns. Chargers smoked Wildcats 51-8 last year. DeSoto, 3-2, has already won more games than in 2001 and ’00 combined.

Troy at Oskaloosa

Notes: Bears picked up second win last week by hammering McLouth, 45-2. Running back Travis Newell had 162 yards and scored five touchdowns. Bears, 2-3, whacked Trojans 26-6 last season. Troy, 4-1, beat Valley Falls, 28-13, last week.

Valley Heights at McLouth

Notes: First-ever game between two teams. For winless Bulldogs, it’s their best chance for a victory. The Mustangs are 1-4. McLouth lost to long-time rival Oskaloosa 45-2 last week. Bulldogs began season with 21 players, but roster now down to 17.

Wellsville at Spring Hill

Notes: Eagles were shut out, 32-0, by Eudora last week, allowing 331 rushing yards. Still, Wellsville, 1-4, has fared better than winless Spring Hill. Baldwin hammered Broncos, 49-20 last week with Spring Hill scoring all its points in the fourth quarter. Spring Hill dropped Wellsville 14-8 last season.
