Sierra Club plans October meetings

A discussion on backpacking and a trip to a local nature reserve highlight October events scheduled by the Wakarusa Group of the Sierra Club.

The club’s monthly meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Lawrence Public Library. Frank Norman will discuss his summer backpacking trip to the River-of-No-Return Wilderness in Idaho.

Club members also will have a field outing Oct. 19 at the Fitch Natural History Reservation and Nelson Environmental Study Area north of Lawrence. Biologist Galen Pittman will lead a guided tour and discuss the reserve’s history and plant and animal life.

The tour group will meet at 9 a.m. at the Lawrence Visitor Center, 402 N. Second St., to carpool to the reserve.

KU students honored for community service

Six Kansas University students were honored Tuesday night for work they completed this past summer in Kansas communities.

The Kansas Community Leadership Corps recognized the students at a dinner and reception at the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Mass.

The corps organizes two-month summer internships on health promotion programs. Students receive a $2,000 stipend for living expenses and a $500 grant to help with their project.

The honorees are Rebekah Moses, Great Bend senior; Sonia Cote, Miltonvale junior; Tara Ala, Oskaloosa freshman; Matthew Marietta, Oskaloosa freshman; Nicole Chiang, Olathe junior; and Andrea Chadwick, Wichita junior.
