Defense contractor to cut about 500 jobs

? Raytheon Co. plans to eliminate more than 500 jobs in Massachusetts and California due to the loss of a satellite contract and a corporate reorganization. The cuts represent about 6.4 percent of its worldwide work force.

The Lexington, Mass., defense contractor said Monday it would eliminate 300 engineering jobs, mostly in Marlboro, by Nov. 1.

Raytheon also will lay off 90 workers at the former headquarters of its command, control, communications and information systems business unit, known as C31, also in Marlboro, by Dec. 6, company spokeswoman Amy Hosmer said.

The C31 division is being merged with other Raytheon defense units as part of a reorganization announced in August.

Raytheon also said it will eliminate 115 jobs in El Segundo, Calif., at the former headquarters of its electronic systems business unit as part of the reorganization.

Raytheon has an aviation plant in Wichita.
