County OKs increase for sheriff’s motor pool

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office can go ahead and expand its fleet of vehicles to accommodate a growing pile of warrants, an occasional jail inmate and a new bomb-sniffing dog.

Douglas County commissioners approved the office’s request for buying nine new vehicles while trading in only six. The three additional vehicles will allow the office to assign vehicles to:

A new K-9 unit. An officer will be assigned to work alongside and handle a dog trained to sniff for drugs and explosives. The office is working to acquire such a dog.

Delivery of criminal warrants and civil process papers.

Training of sheriff’s personnel and occasional transportation for inmates.

The office has $179,380 in its budget for vehicle purchases.
