KU soccer upended by Baylor

? Held to a season-low seven shots, Kansas University’s soccer team suffered its first loss in eight matches, a 2-1 setback to Baylor on Friday at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.

“We didn’t play very well,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “They wanted it more than we did. We didn’t come out ready to play. We were really flat and didn’t look like the same team that played last week. We need to regroup and get a win on Sunday.”

Kansas fell to 7-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the Big 12 Conference, and Baylor improved to 7-4 and 1-2.

Baylor struck quickly when sophomore Kristen Ruef put away her first shot at the 1:03 mark off a pass from Emily Fukuchi.

KU sophomore Lauren Williams rallied the Jayhawks, recording her first goal of the year at the 24:31 mark off assists from senior Lindsay Hunting and sophomore Rachel Gilfillan.

Seven minutes into the second half, the Jayhawks had a go-ahead goal by freshman Caroline Smith overturned because of an offsides call.

The Bears took advantage, taking the lead for good at 54:58 when Baylor’s Ginny Rosario-Tull gathered a pass from Fukuchi and fired a shot past KU goalkeeper Meghan Miller into the lower-right corner.

Kansas will face Texas Tech on Sunday in Lubbock, Texas.
