TV contest leaves Lawrence pair richer by one designer diamond

Ryan Adams didn’t have to find an engagement ring for his fiancee on his own. He had a little help from his future wife, Tiffany & Co. and the ABC daytime program “The View.”

Jill Wright, the fiancee, entered “The View’s Sweet Home Alabama” Web sweepstakes and was randomly picked to win a trip to New York for the two of them.

“At first, I thought it might be a hoax or a scam to get my Social Security number,” Wright said. “It wasn’t until they had me signing affidavits and doing paperwork that I called Ryan.”

The contest was based on the Disney movie “Sweet Home Alabama,” which opened Friday. In the movie, Melanie (Reese Witherspoon) is a small-town girl from Alabama making a new life for herself in New York. The city’s most desired bachelor, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), proposes to her in a deserted Tiffany’s and drama ensues.

Wright and Adams’ trip to New York also included a scene at Tiffany’s, which provided the diamond engagement ring. The couple also won airfare and accommodations  an $18,000 value with the ring and an appearance on “The View.”

The timing was perfect. Adams had proposed to Wright several weeks before and they were shopping for rings.

Wright and Adams live in Lawrence. Wright works part time at Johnson County Community College and is a graduate teaching assistant in English at Kansas University. Adams is a seventh-grade math teacher at South Junior High School.

On Sept. 25, they flew first-class from Kansas City to New York. A limousine took them to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, overlooking Central Park, where they stayed for two nights, paying only for meals and tips.

“The whole trip to New York was exhilarating for both of us because we had never been there before,” Wright said. “We had a driver to take us around places. We tried to fit in as much as we could.”

Wright and Adams took the opportunity to see the Statue of Liberty, ground zero and the musical “Oklahoma.” They also went to Tiffany’s to pick up their ring.

The store chose the ring, but Wright said it was exactly the style she and Adams had been looking for  but bigger. The ring is platinum with a 1.09-carat square-cut diamond.

“Tiffany’s was one of the best experiences,” Wright said. “They treated us really kindly and gave us champagne. They really gave us the royal treatment.”

On Sept. 26, the couple headed to the studio to tape the show. Witherspoon was a guest. She handed the ring to Adams, who then got down on one knee to put it on his fiancee’s finger.

Wright said she and Adams were both nervous.

“All I remember from the actual taping was seeing Ryan down there. My hand was shaking so badly!” she said.

Despite being a little shaken up, Wright said the taping went well. She said the cast members  Lisa Ling, Star Jones, Joy Behar and Meredith Vieira  were warm and wished the couple the luck. Barbara Walters, another host, was not on the set.

The show airs at 10 a.m. today on Sunflower Broadband Channel 12 and at 11 a.m. on Channel 9. Wright plans to watch the show with friends. Adams said he would watch with his class and tape it so his other classes could watch, too.

Wright and Adams plan to be married June 27, 2003.
