Free State defeats city rival with shuffled lineup at tennis triangular

Two events into a stretch of five competitions in eight days, Free State High tennis coach Jon Renberger shuffled his lineup for Monday’s triangular at Lawrence High.

Renberger teamed defending Class 6A singles champion Emily Wang with Emily Loewen against the Lions in No. 1 doubles and played Lacey Luina, Loewen’s regular partner, at No. 1 singles.

The shifting didn’t hurt the Firebirds, who took three of four matches from the Lions and all four from Olathe East.

“This was sandwiched in between some pretty big events,” Renberger said. “And we see Lawrence High in some of those events, so we kind of juggled things a little bit today just to make things a little more interesting so the same kids aren’t playing each other over and over again.”

Wang and Loewen topped LHS twins Abby and Sara Olson, 8-3, and Luina defeated Carrie Jones, 8-1.

“This was my first time playing doubles this year,” Wang said. “I thought it was really fun. I liked playing with Emily.”

Free State’s Rachel Koch defeated Ashley Woodward, 8-3, in No. 2 singles play. Becca Fritzel and Sydney Lartigue picked up Lawrence’s only victory against Free State with an 8-1 defeat of Marisa Steinbach and Brenna Spurgeon in No. 2 doubles.

Against Olathe East, Wang played in her normal singles spot and defeated Leslee Ranson, 8-0. Koch won her No. 2 singles match against Marlana Horner, 8-2.

Loewen and Luina topped Ashlee Ranson and Ashley Newsom, 8-2, in No. 1 doubles, and Spurgeon and Steinbach beat Cori Nemec and Amy Hamilton, 8-6, in No. 2 doubles.

“That was surprising because half of that team took third at state last year and the other half normally plays No. 1 singles for them,” Renberger said of Spurgeon and Steinbach’s victory. “We experimented with a team in that match and picked up an 8-6 win. That was probably the nicest surprise of the day.”

Lawrence High split its two matches with Olathe East, winning the doubles matches, but dropping the singles matchups.

The Olsons defeated Nemec and Leslee Ranson, 8-3, in No. 1 doubles, and Fritzel and Sydney Lartigue topped Newsom and Ashlee Ranson, 8-7 (7-5).

In No. 1 singles, Hamilton defeated April Merino-Bramell, 8-2, and Horner beat Jami Powell, 8-0, in No. 2 singles.

“We played some pretty good doubles,” LHS coach Dick Wedel said. “I think that on any given day our doubles can be a 1 or a 2. They can flip-flop very easily. I think if they all play with their heads on, they can be two very good doubles teams.”

Free State will participate in the Overland Park Aquinas Invitational today at the Plaza in Kansas City. Wang won the tournament last season.

“It’s a bi-state tournament with a lot of Missouri schools in it,” Renberger said. “Because of that, it’s probably the most challenging tournament that we play in all year. We just want to use it to help us for league next Tuesday and regionals the following week. Regardless of wins and losses, it’s going to make us better just being in it.”

The Firebirds will make up a home quad Thursday and compete in the Manhattan High Tournament on Saturday.

The Lions will play host to Shawnee Mission Northwest and Shawnee Mission West on Wednesday.
