Marlins’ employee asked to carry drugs

Miami An employee of the Florida Marlins was allegedly asked to place a padlocked bag containing a pound of marijuana aboard the team’s charter flight from Montreal, club officials said.

Carlos Luis Perez, a former bullpen catcher for the Marlins who now has a similar job with the Montreal Expos, asked Florida video coordinator Cullen McRae before last Thursday’s game in Montreal to bring the bag back to Pro Player Stadium.

When McRae and team equipment manager John Silverman opened the bag in Montreal, they found the marijuana and turned it over to police, Silverman said.

Mexican billionaire wants to buy Angels

Mexico City A Mexican billionaire who owns one of his country’s most successful baseball teams is interested in buying the Anaheim Angels from The Walt Disney Co.

Carlos Peralta went from Mexico City to Los Angeles last week to discuss a possible bid, team spokeswoman Trish Penny said Monday. Peralta could pay between $170 million and $200 million.

Gonzalez undergoes shoulder surgery

Phoenix Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Luis Gonzalez underwent successful surgery Monday to repair his separated left shoulder and damaged ligaments.

Gonzalez, who will not play in the postseason because of the injury, experienced no complications.

Labor deal signing pushed back to today

New York Lawyers for baseball players and owners pushed back signing their labor settlement to today.

The sides had expected to sign the “memorandum of understanding” Monday but said minor editing was still taking place to the document.

Karros to undergo MRI
