Teacher says students learn about rights

An individual’s constitutional rights during police searches and interrogation are taught to high school students – and not just by teachers, said Paul Stuewe, Lawrence High School political science and history teacher.

Lawrence Police officers also discuss the law with students, Stuewe said.

“I have an idea that students know what their rights are,” he said.

Lawrence High and Free State High School have police officers assigned to the schools full time. The officers’ duties include teaching, and they have lessons about searches, Stuewe said.

Stuewe, who teaches about individual rights in his own classes, said most government classes discussed search and seizure rights in civil rights and civil liberties sessions.
