Calvary Temple Assembly of God

“The Gospel in Musical Concert” will be presented by Dennis Terry and White Harvest during the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace. Terry and White Harvest are from Topeka.

The church’s annual Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at noon Sunday, followed by a message from Scripture by Tom Hubbard, youth pastor. There will also be a color-slide presentation, “Looking Back at 2002.”

There will be no Sunday evening service, but Christ’s Ambassadors will meet at its regular time of 5:15 p.m.

Central United Methodist

An Advent Study will be offered at 9:30 a.m. on the first four Sundays in December at Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass. The purpose is to prepare people’s hearts for the coming Christmas season.

First Presbyterian Church

The annual Hanging of the Greens will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway. Children are invited to attend their own activities, which will include making a Jesse Tree.

After the church is decorated for the Advent season, a meal of soup and sandwiches will be served in the fellowship hall. Simple worship begins at 5 p.m. in the sanctuary. The community is invited to attend.

The Session of First Presbyterian Church has called a congregational meeting to be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the sanctuary. There will be a report from the Nominating Committee regarding the election of next year’s leader disciples for the church.

There also will be a discussion about the church’s Stewardship and Capital Campaigns.

First Presbyterian Church of Oskaloosa

The annual Chili & Soup Dinner and Bake Sale of First Presbyterian Church of Oskaloosa, 105 Jefferson, will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 6. There will also be a raffle for a quilt.

First United Methodist

An All-Church Thanksgiving Dinner with a traditional menu will be served at noon Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. The meal will begin after worship services, which will be led by guest minister, the Rev. Ira DeSpain of Baker University and the Baker Ambassadors.

Immanuel Lutheran Church

Thanksgiving Day worship services will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church & University Student Center, 15th and Iowa streets. The community is invited to attend.

Lawrence Baptist Temple

An in-depth, chronological study of God’s word is being offered through the Bible Institute of Lawrence Baptist Temple, 3201 W. 31st St. The deadline for participating in the second semester is Dec. 1. The course meets from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays at the church.

Lawrence Unitarian Fellowship

A Harvest Fest will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by a Thanksgiving semi-potluck feast at noon, at the Lawrence Unitarian Fellowship, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

Plymouth Congregational

The annual Thanksgiving dinner of Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., will be from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday in the fellowship hall and the basement under the sanctuary. The meal is open to church members and the community.

Before the dinner, special music will be provided by the pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade choirs and the sixth-grade bell choir.

Sunday worship services are at 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

St. John the Evangelist

The adult religious education class of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky., will hear a panel discussion on the Catholic response to political conflicts around the world from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Sunday in the parish hall.

The next meeting of Always Our Children is at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the upstairs meeting room of Simon Parish Center. Always Our Children welcomes anyone to the St. John faith community, regardless of sexual orientation. The group lends support to family and friends.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal

The Lawrence Humane Society will visit the children’s groups at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St., during the 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. worship services Sunday. The children will present money and goods that they have collected to help the animals at the shelter.

Dolce Cantorei, the choir of Bishop Seabury Academy, will offer music during the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship service.

A special Thanksgiving Eve service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Trinity Episcopal Church

The parish of Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., will celebrate the official installation of its new rector, the Rev. Jonathon Jensen, at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Rt. Rev. William Smalley, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas, will officiate.

Preaching during the installation will be the Rev. David Bird, rector of Grace Church of Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

A reception in honor of Jensen and his wife, Natalie Jensen, will follow in the parish hall.

Trinity Lutheran Church

Members of Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., will gather on Tuesday for the sorting of food and delivery of Thanksgiving baskets. This annual project of Trinity’s Social Concerns will benefit several families of children in New York School, 936 N.Y.

Thanksgiving services at Trinity Lutheran will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary. An offering will be taken to benefit the mission church planting near DeSoto.

Women of the ELCA at Trinity Lutheran are selling tickets to the Scandinavian Smorgasbord, Bake and Craft Sale, set for Dec. 7. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A suggested donation is $12.50 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-10, with children under 5 free.

The Bake and Craft Sale will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature a variety of baked goods, including homemade Swedish rye bread, noodles, cookies and candies. There will be homemade crafts and gifts. A donated quilt will be displayed, with the opportunity to own the quilt for a donation.

All proceeds from these events will benefit Lutheran and local charities.

Unity Church of Lawrence

The Rev. Sherry Schultz will conclude “Make Me an Instrument,” a spiritual journey based on the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, during worship services Sunday at Unity Church of Lawrence, Ninth Street and Madeline Lane.

The 11 a.m. service will be followed by Unity’s annual Potlach, an opportunity to let go of objects from the past that can bless another. Members also will bring and share pies.

During the 11 a.m. Sunday worship services, five new members will be received into the fellowship of West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive. The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be observed.

A carry-in lunch will follow the service. Members will participate in the annual “Hanging of the Greens,” readying the sanctuary and the church building for the Advent season.

Worden United Methodist

A Community Thanksgiving Celebration will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Worden United Methodist Church, 298 E. 900 Road. There will be a worship service, followed by a time for fellowship.

The celebration is sponsored by the following congregations: Washington Creek Church, Lone Star Church, Clinton Presbyterian Church, St. John’s United Church of Christ and Worden United Methodist Church.
