Lawrence School Board

Board to focus on bond issue

Bottom Line

The board’s meeting is devoted almost entirely to discussion of a bond issue for school construction and renovation.

President Scott Morgan said the intent was for the board to vote on contents of a bond issue. It will be about $60 million with payment of debt over 20 years.

The plan would go to a vote of the public in April.

Background

Key improvements include construction of a new South Junior High School, renovation of Lawrence High School, additions to New York and Cordley schools and expansion of Lawrence Alternative High School.

In addition, East Heights, Centennial and Riverside schools would cease being used for elementary classes.

Other business

The agenda:

  • Convene a 6:30 p.m. executive session for consultation with the district’s attorney before calling to order the regular meeting at 7 p.m.
  • Receive comments from Scott Morgan, board president; Randy Weseman, superintendent; and board members.
  • Open the floor to public comment.
  • Consider a $21,565 contract with textHELP Systems of Antrim, Northern Ireland, for “Read and Write Gold” software that assists special-education students with reading and writing.
  • Consider approving a contract not to exceed $16,750 with the law firm of Gilmore & Bell of Kansas City, Mo., and Wichita for services required of a district bond issue for school construction and renovation.
  • Consider drafts of legal documents required for a school bond issue that would likely be considered by voters April 1.
