Havana ? American director Steven Spielberg remembered Holocaust victims and gathered with Cuban Jews during a visit to this Caribbean nation.

After gathering with members of Cuba’s Jewish community at a local synagogue Nov. 6, Spielberg traveled to the Jewish cemetery in Guanabacoa, on the other side of Havana Bay, to place a stone at the memorial erected there in memory of those who died in the Holocaust.

Spielberg, who is Jewish, is actively involved in projects aimed at remembering both Holocaust victims and survivors.

His Shoah Foundation has videotaped the testimonies of more than 50,000 such survivors.

His film “Schindler’s List” chronicles the life of a German man who saved hundreds of Jews from Nazi death camps.

Spielberg also met with President Fidel Castro and Cuban film students. The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Arts and Industry had invited Spielberg to the island.
