County Democrats elect new party officers

Marilyn Greathouse was elected the new chairwoman of the Douglas County Democratic Party during a party meeting Thursday night.

Greathouse replaces Carrie Moore.

Jamie Shew was elected vice chairman, Kathy Greenlee was elected secretary, and Jack Davidson was elected treasurer.

The party elects a new set of officers every two years.

Trade food donation for chiropractic work

Lawrence residents can do a good deed and make their back feel better Saturday.

Advanced Chiropractic Services, 3300 W. 15th St., is conducting a Patient Appreciation Day from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Clients who haul in a sack of canned food will receive a free chiropractic adjustment.

Proceeds will benefit The Salvation Army’s Holiday Assistance Program.

Improve troupe offers free performance

The Improbables, a local improvisational theater group, will stage a free show tonight at the Lawrence Arts Center.

“That’s Improv!” begins at 7 p.m. in the performing arts studio at the center, 940 N.H. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Improbables grew out of an improvisational acting class taught last spring at the arts center by Kansas University history professor Eric Rath. He’s teaching the class again this session, and Friday’s performance is the course’s culmination.

KU workshop to help graduate students

A Kansas University workshop Monday will help graduate students prepare for their careers.

The workshop will be conducted by Susan Basalla and Maggie Debelius, authors of “So What are you Going to Do with That? A Guide to Career-Changing for M.A.s and Ph.Ds” It runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Jayhawk Room at the Kansas Union.

The authors will share their research and collection of case studies on the transition from earning an academic degree to landing a nonacademic job.

KU Med to stage Medicare HMO seminar

Changes to Medicare health benefits through HMOs will be the topic of a free seminar Tuesday at KU Med.

The seminar, taught by a KU Med patient relations counselor, is from 10 a.m. to noon at the KU Med Senior Resource Center, just inside the hospital entrance.

The counselor will discuss patients’ options in regard to a letter received by 27,000 Medicare recipients in the greater Kansas City area indicating their Medicare Managed Care plan had decided not to renew their coverage.
