The suspect in Tuesday’s shooting in eastern Lawrence received more than a court-appointed attorney during a hearing Wednesday before Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone.

He also received an escort from a court security team.

Antonio Floyd Jr., 19, Lawrence, is charged with attempted first-degree murder and sexual battery in an attack early Tuesday morning on a 31-year-old woman who was to be a witness in a federal drug case.

Prior to Wednesday’s hearing as he was being brought into the courtroom, Floyd appeared to be trying to plant his feet in place and keep from walking. Two jailers forced him into a seat and then sat next to him. A third sheriff’s court security officer stood in the aisle next to him.

While waiting for his case to be called by Malone, Floyd repeatedly turned toward several relatives sitting in the courtroom and appeared to be trying to talk to them. Sheriff’s officers finally asked the relatives to leave the courtroom.

Floyd then became upset, and started asking, “Where’s my family?” loudly enough to disrupt other cases before Malone, who finally directed sheriff’s officers to bring Floyd’s relatives back into the courtroom.

Malone appointed attorney Ken McRae to represent Floyd, and the judge set a preliminary hearing for 9 a.m. Nov. 14.

Floyd remains in the Douglas County Jail on $250,000 bond.

The woman who was shot was still listed in serious condition Wednesday at a Kansas City-area hospital.
