Kanas University: Language therapy research seeks child participants

Researchers from Kansas University’s department of speech, language and hearing are seeking children to participate in a project this summer.

The researchers are conducting an intervention program for children ages 6 to 9 who have language learning impairments. The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, will evaluate the effectiveness of different types of language therapies.

The program, which is free, lasts from 8 a.m. to noon June 3 to July 27. The schedule includes either one hour and 40 minutes of language intervention or one hour and 40 minutes of academic enrichment each day. Those interested in participating should contact study organizers no later than Friday.

Medicare: Health-care officials to discuss proposed cuts

Kansas City, Kan. Kansas City-area health-care providers will gather Wednesday at KU Med to discuss proposed cuts to Medicare.

The forum will include discussion on the effect of cuts on hospitals, physicians and home health agencies.

The forum, organized by U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore, will include Irene Cumming, president and chief executive officer of KU Med. Officials from Health Midwest, MAST Ambulance Service, Home Health Care, Providence Medical Center, St. Luke’s Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Medical Society of Johnson and Wyandotte Counties, American Academy of Family Physicians and Villa St. Joseph also are scheduled to speak.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. The forum runs from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the School of Nursing Auditorium, 39th Street and Rainbow Boulevard.

Ceremony: Kansas Air National Guard to dedicate new hangar

A ceremony Thursday will help celebrate the completion of years of renovation on the Jumbo Hangar at Forbes Field, Topeka.

The 190th Air Refueling Wing, Kansas Air National Guard, will have an official ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. at the hangar.

The $13.8 million renovation is a multi-year project that has made the hangar one of the most modern in the Air National Guard. The 182,000-square-foot hangar can house three KC-135 stratotankers and also provides office space for the unit’s logistics group, support group, finance and other personnel.

U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun will be the key speaker.
