Selma Beth Smith

Emporia Services for Selma Beth Smith, 85, Hutchinson, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Emporia. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.

Mrs. Smith died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Hutchinson Hospital.

She was born March 5, 1917, in Anthony, the daughter of Wood Grove and Mina Belle (Anderson) Kassens. She graduated in 1934 from Emporia High School and attended Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia. She lived in Ottawa from 1949 to 1982, when she moved to Hutchinson.

Mrs. Smith was an office manager and secretary at Ottawa Junior High School from 1957 until she retired in 1982.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 15, Ottawa; the Keystone Queen Esther Sunday school class of Hutchinson First Baptist Church and a former member of the Mission Possible Sunday school class of the Ottawa First Baptist Church.

She married Charles Kenneth Smith on Aug. 9, 1938, in Emporia. He died Nov. 9, 1957.

Survivors include a son, Dennis L. Smith, Topeka; a daughter, Gayle Thomas, Hutchinson; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
