U.S. urges Americans to avoid India, Pakistan

May 25, 2002

— Americans should not travel to India or Pakistan, nuclear-armed South Asian neighbors where tensions have risen so high over disputed Kashmir that "the risk of intensified military hostilities cannot be ruled out," the State Department said Friday.

The warning about India, the first in the current crisis, urged Americans in India to leave.

The Pakistan warning superseded one issued March 22 in connection with the departure of some U.S. personnel and specific threats against Americans because of the anti-terror campaign in neighboring Afghanistan.
