Shirley Jean Dowd

? Overland Park Memorial services for Shirley Jean Dowd, 68, Olathe, will be at 11 a.m. today at Overland Park Christian Church. Inurnment will be in Glenwood Cemetery, near Basehor.

Ms. Dowd died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Merriam.

She was born on March 16, 1934, in Lawrence, the daughter of Manuel and Edna (Mann) Snavely. She graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute with a bachelor of fine arts.

Ms. Dowd was a widely exhibited painter and studied in Rome on a scholarship from the Jewish Women’s Club. She helped establish the West Port Art Show and the art show at the American Royal. She was also renowned for her cooking and was the grand champion in the pie-baking contest at the Topeka State Fair in the early 1960s. She also was a Girl Scout leader and worked with the Kansas City Blazers swim team.

Survivors include a son, Scott Dowd, Overland Park; two daughters, Cheryl Galvez, Huntley, Ill., and Cathy Dowd, Topeka; and five grandchildren.

Amos Family Chapel, Shawnee, is in charge of arrangements.
