Phoenix signs Maine attraction

? The Phoenix Coyotes signed the University of Maine’s Michael Schutte to a multiyear contract Thursday.

Schutte, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound free agent, converted from defense to left wing last season and gave up his final year of eligibility to pursue his dream of playing in the NHL.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Schutte, 22, led the Black Bears to a berth in the NCAA final against Minnesota on April 6 and scored two goals in Minnesota’s 4-3 overtime victory, earning a spot on the Frozen Four all-tournament team on defense.

Schutte is the second NCAA scoring standout signed by the Coyotes recently. On April 24, Phoenix signed Jeff Taffe, who had two playoff game-winning goals for Minnesota.
