KU names finalists in director search

Kansas University has announced five finalists for its director of admissions and scholarships position.

The list includes two KU graduates and a former Kansas community college official.

“I’m very pleased with the quality of the candidates,” said Richard Morrell, university registrar and chairman of the search committee. “They come from institutions like the University of Kansas. They all have different types of experience, but it’s all the right type of experience.”

The new director, who Morrell said should be hired by this fall, will replace Alan Cerveny, who left in April to become dean of admissions at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The finalists are:

Pamela Troup Horne, assistant director of undergraduate admissions at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor since 1999. She was a residence hall director and assistant to the dean of women at KU in the mid-1970s.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in speech communication and a master’s degree in education counseling from KU.

Susan H. Flanagin, assistant director of admissions and director of the campus visitor center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 1998.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in business at KU and has served as assistant director of admissions at Baker University in Baldwin.

Stacey Kostell, associate director of undergraduate admissions at Arizona State University since 1999.

Larry F. Kruse, director of high school and college relations at Oklahoma State University since 1991.

He served as dean of student services and director of public relations and recruitment at Seward County Community College in Liberal and as a composition and literature instructor at Barton County Community College in Great Bend.

Robert L. Laney Jr., director of admissions at Lincoln University in Chester County, Pa., since 1996.

Horne will give a public presentation at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the KU Visitor Center auditorium.

The other presentations are tentatively scheduled, also at 3 p.m. in the Visitor Center: Kruse, June 10; Kostell, June 11; Flanagin, June 12 and Laney, June 14.
