Bowa suspended for three games

Philadelphia Philadelphia manager Larry Bowa was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount Thursday for last week’s run-in with umpire Tony Randazzo.

Bowa was punished for “arguing excessively and making inappropriate comments” to Randazzo after a disputed call at home plate in the eighth inning of a 12-9 loss at Arizona.

The suspension, handed down by baseball disciplinarian Bob Watson, is scheduled to begin today. Bowa said he will not appeal the suspension and will miss a three-game series at Montreal.

Yanks promote pitcher

Boston The New York Yankees purchased the contract of right-hander Mike Thurman on Thursday from Triple-A Columbus. The former Expo was 5-3 with a 4.18 ERA in nine starts at Columbus. Thurman replaces Adrian Hernandez, who was sent back to Columbus after losing on Wednesday.

Twins activate Koskie

Minneapolis Minnesota will activate third baseman Corey Koskie from the disabled list in time for today’s game against Anaheim. Infielder Casey Blake will be outrighted to Triple-A Edmonton. Koskie was batting .311 when he was placed on the DL on May 10 with a pulled right hamstring.

Rocker accepts demotion

Dallas John Rocker is reporting to the minor leagues.

Unlike last month, when Rocker worked with a private instructor rather than go to Triple-A Oklahoma, the left-handed reliever will join the Texas Rangers’ top farm club, probably in time for today’s game against Sacramento.

The Rangers demoted Rocker again Tuesday. He has until today to report; otherwise, he could be put on the suspended list by the team. In 17 games, Rocker is 0-1 with one save in four chances and a 7.53 ERA.
