High-density housing secures preliminary OK

The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission on Wednesday tentatively approved rezoning for a proposed high-density housing development on the southwest corner of Sixth Street and Folks Road.

Lawrence developer Doug Compton had asked to rezone the land from an agricultural to a residence-office district or, in the alternative, a planned residential development averaging a maximum of 12 housing units per acre. Commissioners approved the latter option, but with a cap of 10 units per acre, contingent upon commission approval of a development plan for the property within 18 months.

He was opposed by about two dozen neighborhood residents who attended the meeting wearing yellow T-shirts emblazoned with “RS-2” the lower-density single-family zoning designation they preferred for the property.

Remaining items on the planning commission agenda including a permit for an “open” homeless shelter were delayed until 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.
