Haskell Avenue area draws three warehouse operations

The southern portion of Haskell Avenue is becoming a popular location for small warehouse operations, with three projects set to start construction.

City officials this week gave approval to site plans for two new warehouse facilities to be built directly south of E&E Display Group, which is near 29th Street and Haskell Avenue.

City commissioners approved a 5,000-square-foot office/warehouse facility for TaiKan Inc., a Lawrence-based manufacturer of components used by cable television systems around the world. Commissioners also approved a 4,000-square-foot warehouse for Kirk Welding Supply.

Ching Wang, vice president for TaiKan, which currently is at 1546 E. 23rd St., said the new location would give his business room to expand. In addition to the 5,000-square-foot warehouse, which should be completed by early fall, the company hopes to add 10,000 square feet of research and development space at the site during the next couple of years.

Once that expansion is completed, Wang said it may allow the Lawrence facility to add five to 10 more technicians to its current work force of seven people. The company has more than 300 employees, but most of its work force is at factories in China and Taiwan.

Ron Birdwell, Lawrence manager for Kirk Welding Supply, said his company’s new building wasn’t expected to increase the firm’s employment levels. Instead, the company is moving from its location at 725 E. 22nd St., to improve its storage capacity.

The third project is under construction by Harris Construction at 3104 Haskell Ave. Bo Harris with Harris Construction said his company was building a 10,000-square-foot office/warehouse building just north of the construction company’s offices at 31st Street and Haskell Avenue.

Harris said he’s struck a deal with a company to lease 5,000 square feet of the building and is seeking a tenant for the other half. He declined to identify the tenant for the building.

“We think it will be a good building for companies that need some office space but also have storage needs, or maybe do some light manufacturing or has some product that gets shipped in or out,” Harris said.

The building is expected to be completed this fall.
