Fly-in, art festival slated in Atchison

Atchison During Memorial Day weekend, antique airplanes and artists from a five-state region will descend on Atchison for the Antique Airplane Fly-in and the Riverbend Art Festival.

The fly-in will be Friday and Saturday at Amelia Earhart Airport.

It will showcase vintage aircraft and will honor the 72-year history of TWA.

The Riverbend Art Festival is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and will feature a variety of artwork, food, a children’s fair and musical performances.

LHS alumna exhibits artwork in Kansas City

Kansas City, Mo. Ellen Greene, a graduate of Lawrence High School, is among the artists included in the “Out of the Nursery” exhibit at the Byron Cohen Gallery, 2020 Baltimore.

The exhibit, which runs through Monday, is inspired by images and articles that reference babyhood and early adolescence.

Author to read Vietnamese poetry

Kansas City, Mo. John Balaban will discuss the Vietnamese language and “Spring Essence,” his translation of poems by the 18th-century writer Ho Xuan Huong, on Sunday’s edition of “New Letters on the Air.”

Balaban also will read from his “Locusts at the Edge of Summer: New and Selected Poems,” winner of the 1998 William Carlos Williams Award and a finalist for the National Book Award.

“New Letters on the Air” is broadcast at 5 p.m. Sundays on KCUR-FM 89.3.
